Domains are the unique names that identify websites on the internet. They are created at the level of the top-level (TLD) and used to distinguish one website from another. While the.cab domain is perfect for taxi services, it’s also a great choice for other businesses that move people or products around town like delivery companies and transportation apps. Despite the wide range of community-engaged research (CARES, CTSA, EHR, PCMH, PwDM, and RAB) initiatives across the country, they all have key components in common: the formation of diverse CABs, an understanding that CAB engagement is more than a simple advisory role, a commitment to addressing the social determinants of health, and the use of rigorous evaluation methods. A shared definition of engagement can help researchers and their community partners articulate the value of their work and identify a set of domains to guide future efforts.
We identified five domains based on the motivations of stakeholders that collaborated with university-based researchers to engage in research. Although the motivators may vary somewhat by disease or other factors, they generally include:
The first domain, Creating a enabling environment, includes the creation of a culture of collaboration, which is critical to sustaining and expanding engaged research activities. This can be accomplished by using methods such as focus groups and interviewing key informants to understand the need for a particular type of research and the barriers or obstacles to conducting it. This information can then be used to create a targeted and responsive research agenda. Finally, it is important to evaluate the impact of a CAB’s work by using qualitative and quantitative measures to determine its influence on improved health outcomes. This requires a comprehensive evaluation plan that includes the definition of outcome metrics and the development of measurement tools. This is the first step toward moving beyond descriptive analyses to evaluating how and why a CAB leads to better outcomes. This will allow the research community to refine and expand its engagement strategies. It will also contribute to a greater understanding of how to best leverage the power of the community in health care.
